About Me

My name is Katie Shrieves, and I’m a lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. I teach and advise students in my university’s fully-online B.A. program in English Studies, and one of the things I love most about my job is working with the accomplished, interesting, and global group of students who are getting their English degrees online.

Because most of my teaching is online, I’ve become very interested in digital pedagogy. I spend a lot of time thinking, talking, and writing about best practices in online teaching, and I am currently completing a graduate certificate in Instructional Technology Design from UMass-Boston.

When I was an undergraduate at William and Mary, a class in 17th-century English literature fired my imagination and inspired me to pursue an M.A. and Ph.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill with a specialty in Renaissance literature. My interests in 16th- and 17th-century English literature and culture include: iconography and emblems; reading practices and material engagement with printed texts; writing by and about early modern women; early modern scientific writing, including alchemy; and more.

My teaching focuses primarily on British literature, especially the medieval and early modern periods, however my course repertoire also includes a variety of other subjects, ranging from history of the English language to science fiction and fantasy.

This website and blog reflects my personal views, not the views of my employer.
